Yes. One non-profit organization is called PEHT (The Project to End Human Trafficking).
The excerpt below speaks of the motivation for the beginning of this program.
"The initial goal of the founders was not to begin an organization, but simply to offer educational lectures about human trafficking. They quickly found that the need for information about slavery was great and they consulted with similar groups, such as Free the Slaves, to determine the best way to move forward with their work. Today, PEHT engages in anti-trafficking coalition building, educational outreach, direct service to victims, and collaboration with other national and international organizations in the global fight against human trafficking."

Slavery: aberration or not?
Definitely not an aberration. If you look around for it even just a tiny but, you can see slavery in many forms all over the world quite easily.

Have the media done anything to help?
Yes! TIME magazine published an article the 27th of this month (October) about slavery that takes place today in Pakistan. It talks about how the laborers are cheated out of what they deserve and are then forced to work for no pay after all of that...and at gun point! Put yourself in this position. How would you feel if you always had someone of higher status breathing down the back of your neck with a gun in his hand making sure you don't mess up because if you do, you pay the price. What is the price? In most instances, it is your life.
Below is an excerpt from the article previously mentioned.
"A 2004 study by the International Labour Office (ILO) estimated that there are up to a million haari families in Sindh alone, the majority living in conditions of debt bondage, which the U.N. defines as modern-day slavery. Last fall, Pakistan's Daily Times newspaper quoted the labor minister of neighboring Punjab province as saying that landlords hold millions of forced laborers in "private prisons" across the country."

What are some of the numbers?
This video promotes awareness of modern-day slavery. You can help with this promoting too! Making a video would be nice, but it is not necessary. Just sending out a mass text or e-mail to all your friends educating them about the topic is helpful in a big way. The more people know about the horrific truth regarding slavery and its presence in the world, the more people we have on our side of the battle fighting against such brutality against our own kind.

How severe is it?
See for yourself in this real life story that has affected many women. This type of scam is not uncommon. Make sure that this not only never happens to you, but help us prevent it from happening to others!
A man would go around and meet teenage girls. He was handsome and talked real smooth. He would flirt with them. He would tell them that he knew where there was a lot of good paying jobs working as maids and cooks. Up in the gold fields of Brazil there were boom towns, filled with rich men and not enough women to do the cleaning and cooking (as in the US, such jobs in Brazil are generally held by women). He would fill their heads with whatever dream seemed to be the girls thing. And he would get them to agree to fly away with him and some other girls he met to a great new opportunity.
When they got there, they got some surprises. The boom town turned out to be a few muddy blocks of crummy little shacks. They were told they owed huge amounts of money for the plane ticket and their rent and their food. There were no jobs as maids or waitresses. The only jobs were as prostitutes. They were told they had to be prostitutes and pay back their debts. They would not be allowed to leave.
These places were hundreds of miles deep in the jungle and none of the girls knew where they were. There was no phones and no police. The only way in and out was by plane, and no one could afford that, assuming the boss would allow it in the first place. There was only one way to get any money at all.
Girls who refused to go along were beaten. Some who tried to escape were killed. The rest of them were scared and did what they were told.

While the conference that this video talks about has already passed, the ideas proposed could possibly be very beneficial in the prevention of further trafficking of slaves. Do you agree?

What can I do?
Alot. Just by telling people and spreading the word about slavery you are helping out. People associate slavery with the past and are unaware of burden it has brought into modern times. So what's the simplest way to help?- talk about it. Educate others about modern slavery going on today. Let people know the harsh reality of slavery and its consequences. These days there are so many ways of communication. Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube, texting, calling, AIM....etc. If we all just took some time out to spread the word it would increase the awareness, slowly we will be able to work together to abolish slavery. Its that easy.
